Reasons to install a solar geyser in your home

Previously, property owners could choose which energy source to use for water heaters. In South Africa, regulation now requires that at least 50% of your water heater be powered by renewable energy. We are fortunate to have year-round sunshine, which makes the idea of a solar geyser even more appealing.

What does a solar geyser cost?

Installation of solar hot water comes with a steep upfront cost, as do many home renovation initiatives. A 200-litre solar water geyser is installed for about R15 000, with installation fees typically ranging between R2 000 and R6 000. A solar water heater costs more upfront than an electric or gas water heater (including installation), but over time, the savings on your electricity bill will make up for this. 

Currently, depending on the system you purchase, you may receive a rebate of up to R8 900. The government's initiative to expand solar adoption nationwide and so meet their renewable energy objective is reflected in the rise in the incentive. The aim of the rebate increase was also to provide a consumer with a payback of 5-years or less.

How hot can the water get?

Your geyser should be heated to a temperature between 55 and 600C. Most solar water heaters heat water to a temperature of 55 to 650 °C, while some can reach much higher temperatures. 

To avoid being scalded by the hot water, you must be aware of over-performing systems. The water temperature at the point of use, unless otherwise specified, shall be at least 380°C for residential fixtures such as baths, basins, and showers, and at least 450°C for sinks. At any point of use, the temperature is not supposed to rise above 550 C.

A solar geyser offers a number of advantages:

  • Decreases your electricity bills

Installing a solar geyser will enable you to reduce your electricity costs just like solar PV systems. Solar geyser systems offer some free hot water each day, and the savings pile up over time. The monthly electricity cost for your household is typically 30 to 50% used by the electrical geyser. Your electricity consumption can be cut by up to 70% if you switch to a solar-powered geyser from a conventional one.

Solar energy is unaffected by the current electricity shortage and continues to provide hot water even when there is load shedding.

  • Environmentally friendly heating solution

When you heat water with electrically powered devices, they contribute to pollution. For example, if you use grid energy to run your home's hot water heater, it was probably produced using fossil fuels. Greenhouse gases are released into the atmosphere whenever you heat water with fossil fuels like natural gas.

With a solar hot water system, the energy you use to heat your water has no emissions.

  • Minimal to no upkeep

A properly maintained solar geyser can last for over 20 years while continuously using solar energy to provide free hot water. When you have a solar geyser installed, maintenance will be minimal. As a safety measure, it's a good idea to replace the circulated antifreeze fluid and have your system inspected by a contractor every few years. Otherwise, though, there isn't much need for active maintenance.
